The requirement to determine the thickness of an asphalt layers can occur in the field of road construction as well as for inspection of an existing road.

Many road construction companies calculate and charge their cost based on the thickness of the asphalt layer; this procedure of cost calculation was introduced in Germany more than 30 years ago and is recognized by most national road construction authorities in a national standard since 1989.

Measuring the thickness of a road layer using the old-fashioned core drill method is a destructive, time-consuming, costly and inaccurate procedure. ElektroPhysiks StratoTest gauge has none of these drawbacks, combining completely non-destructive measurement with accurate and repeatable test results displayed within seconds.

The StratoTest works according to the same principle as a metal detectors. While metal detectors only detect the presence of metal, the StratoTest gauge can also measure the exact distance to the metal surface.

Aluminum reflectors are installed at preselected spots in traffic direction prior to road paving. First, detect the metal reflector using the StratoTest gauge. Then, the measuring probe is positioned over the reflector and layer thickness is displayed immediately.
